Why I don't trust FireFox? A lot of reasons...

I will stick with IE. I know that it is fancy now to switch to FireFox and to start blaming IE for all the sins of the 'software' world. Well Peter, you have made my evening... Thanks for this posting. I completely agree with everything you write.

IE is a mediocre browser compared to Firefox. It is lacking in standards compliancy, proper PNG rendering, and so much more.

I cannot count how many times I have had to wipe a user's machine because 3rd party add-ons rendered IE completely broken. Because it is so tightly integrated into the OS, you are left with no other choice.

Firefox, because of how extentions are layered over the program, you will NEVER have to re-install because of a bad extension. Yo simply delete the extension.

Until IE can offer 100% compliance to CSS 1.x, 2.x, etc., AND seperate itself from the operating system, it cannot hold a candle to Firefox.

I have been using IE now for years and have not experienced any of the problems you mentioned here. It depends of course what you are downloading :-). Compliance to standards, I think IE does a very good job at it and to me it is responsible for the boom in corporate intranet/web applications the last years. Many developers have benefited from all the extensions within IE to deliver their apps in a more productive, richer and scalable way.

You don't realize teh only one who will suffer from this decision are you and the people who use your computer. It's like Darwin in full effect. "I will stick with IE, I don't trust Firefox!"... well go ahead, by all means! :)

I agree completely with Peter too and FireFox won't get it to my machine. For John and Frans, I completely disagree and did not see the problems mentioned in these comments either. On the field of security there's a huge improvement in XP SP2, W2K3 SP1 (RC1) and we can expect to see more of this stuff in the future in the light of the "Trustworthy Computing Initiative" etc. For managing plug-ins, there's now a "Manage Add-ons" to enable/disable plug-ins. The pop-up blocker is just another great sample of the changes in SP2. And don't forget there *IS* an IE7 coming up (no schedules publicly available yet).

If it comes to features like tab-browsing (don't like this by the way, we moved in Office from a MDI style of working to multiple buttons on the taskbar which are grouped nicely together by XP and W2K3, so why would you take the reverse step for browsing?) etc, you're free to download a bunch of additions via http://windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=63 that enable you to do these kind of things in IE.

Guess it's a "religion debate" again? Maybe I should give it a try (in a sandboxed Virtual PC), just to experience the kick of uninstalling it a couple of minutes later (call me a weird guy if you like) :-)

Erm... I had to. I was running FF 0.9 on my iBook. I downloaded some extensions (Web Developer, Tabbrowser Extensions, Sort Bookmarks and probably a few others that I can't remember) after they had installed, I restarted the browser only to find that everything had somehow locked up. I couldn't enter anything in the address bar and clicking on my bookmarks wouldn't do anything.

I figured it must have been one of the extensions but to my surprise I couldn't uninstall any of them! Seriously, I'd right-click them on the Extensions Menu but nothing happened. The Uninstall button was also washed out (unclickable).

Solution? Reinstall FF. If I was more geeky I probably could have delved into the installation directory but I wasn't.

The more I use Mac version of FF the more I'm convinced that the Mozilla boys were drunk when they were porting it over. Never had any problems on the Windows platform.

Just thought I'd add my 2c ;P
