CAML is here to stay

Fitz is back online :-) and has a statement to make: CAML is too good to just kill it! And I cannot agree more. Although difficult to master, CAML provides a very flexible and powerful way of working with the structure of SharePoint data. Interesting is that Mike is promising us more postings in the near future. Keep you on that Mike!

Today I wanted to remove some of the toolbar buttons on the DispForm.aspx and the EditForm.aspx (View- and Edit Properties) of a document library. I found out that those buttons are defined in <template-dir>\Lists\DocLib\Schema.xml. Although I expected to be able to set the Visible-property of those buttons ("Alert Me" and "Discuss") to false or perform some similar task to quickly remove those buttons. I noticed that the Schema.xml contained one big blob of inline HTML for the complete toolbar! Not so nice at all, if you ask me! Quite a task to make the right modifications and if you make a little mistake in the XML. the complete site will no longer work! In the end it worked, but I'm not that impressed yet.
