WordML to PDF conversion (Continued)

Last week I had this posting regarding the options we have for converting WordML to PDF directly on the server. I received a couple of good comments and emails on it pointing us to a number of possible paths to follow. Here is a summary:

Rob Barker refers us to a company in the States called BlueBeam Software. They have a product called BlueBeam Conversion Server. This looks interesting since they are able to handle the Office 11 file formats directly on the server.
Patrick Verbruggen talked about CambridgeDocs WordML to XSL:FO Translation. Martin Born from the Danisch MS Sub (the person who formulated the original question :-)) tried it out but they found that the XML:FO format is not 100% compatible with WordML. He contacted the company directly, so we might have updates.
Aspose is not really an option since it does not support the WordML format.

Well, if there are other options, let us know :-) A lot of people are interested in this.

This article give us an Word2FO.xsl which can transform any WordML document in an XSLFO version

After you can transform in anything you want from PFD to HTML for example

In you just download the last SDK of Office 2003, you can find also some command line exe very very cool

WORDMLTOXSLT.exe : a tool to extract/create the XSLT using to render a WordMl document
WordmlHTML : a XSL to render WordML document in Ie without Office

The MSDN article has been written by somebody from RenderX (http://www.renderx.com). We have used and customised the (free) XSL stylesheets and tested it with different XSL-FO to PDF rendering engines and it seemed that XEP by Renderx gave the best results.

Others that I have been looking at are rendering engines from http://alt-soft.com, XINC, APOC, and Antenna House.

So, now we are integrating XEP in our WordML-based document generation product. One of these days it goes into production in an governmental organisation in Belgium.

Keep in mind however that conversion is never perfect: not everything in Word is supported so this only works in a controlled environment were users work with a tested template, and styles (with document enforcement turned on).

Currently, Altsoft runs a beta testing of support for WordML in Xml2PDF. We are planning to release a new version with WordML to PDF functionality in the May. If someone on this blog is interested in the evaluation of a beta release do not hesitate to contact us at info@alt-soft.com. Please include several lines with an information about yourself and the purpose of getting a beta version to the inquiry.

I can't but mention that Xml2PDF version 2.3 is officially released. WordML to PDF conversion is available within it.
